12/2/2019 3:00:00 PM | Volleyball
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The season is not yet over for the St. Cloud State University volleyball team. After a historic regular season and trip to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championship, St. Cloud State is set to embark on another journey, as the team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional. The Huskies opening round foe is a familiar one, as they are set to face Northern State University in the opening round of the NCAA Regional at 5 p.m. on December 5, 2019 in Kearney, Nebraska.
St. Cloud State and Northern State were two of the top four teams in the NSIC this season and one of four schools to represent the conference at the NCAA Regional. Joining the Huskies and Wolves are Minnesota-Duluth and Concordia-St. Paul as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in the tournament.
Tickets for the regional can be purchased on Nebraska-Kearney's athletic site until the start of the match. All-Tournament passes will also be available for purchase at the door. Tickets prices are $10 for adults and $7 for students/seniors. Children under the age of two will receive free admission per NCAA policy.
Fans who cannot make the trek can follow the Huskies in a variety of ways. In addition to live stats and video, KVSC will stream every St. Cloud State match during the regional. Score updates can also be found on the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUhuskies_vb).
Here are the five things to know before St. Cloud State's NCAA Regional debut:
2nd – This will be just the second meeting between the Huskies and Wolves this year, a rarity amongst the top teams in the NSIC this season. Fans can hope the second meeting between St. Cloud State and Northern State is as good, if not better, than the first. On October 12, the nationally ranked Huskies and Wolves needed five sets to determine a victor, with Northern State coming out on top 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 30-28, 21-25, 9-15). Linsey Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn. / Maple Lake) recorded a team and match-leading 21 kills over the course of five sets, while Clara Krenz (Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul) led the way with 28 digs.
6 – That match featured the Huskies first big comeback of the season, as they rallied from a 20-14 deficit to win the marathon third set 30-28. The set showcased St. Cloud State defensive prowess, as blocks from Phebie Rossi (Rapid City, S.D. / Stevens), Maddy Torve (Loretto, Minn. / Heritage Christian Academy) and Halle Hughes (Mankato, Minn. / Mankato West) helped the Huskies win 10 of 12 points to tie the set at 23-23. Fittingly, it was a block from Torve and Hughes that clinched the 30-28 win in what is the longest set played by St. Cloud State this season.
1461 – Defense has certainly not been an issue for the Huskies all season long, as the lead the NSIC in total digs (2162) and digs/set (18.96) throughout the season and ranked #16 in the nation in digs/set at the conclusion of the NSIC Tournament. In fact, five different student-athletes from St. Cloud State recorded 200+ digs during the regular season, while three of those five tallied 300+ and combined for 1461 of the team's 2162 digs. Leading the way is none other than Krenz, who is 29 digs shy of breaking the program's single-season digs record at 650, while Rachel was the highest ranking non-libero in the NSIC with 473 digs to her name. Taylor Olstad (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) had a career season as the Huskies defensive specialist thanks to her 338 digs entering the NCAA Regional.
102 – St. Cloud State's passing game isn't the only aspect of its defense making waves this season. Thanks to her outstanding performance at the NSIC Tournament, Rossi became the first Husky since 2010 to record 100 total blocks in a season. In just her first season with St. Cloud State, Rossi leads the team in all blocking categories, including solo blocks (12), block assists (90) and total blocks (102).
1343 – Also joining the ranks of the "firsts": junior setter Torve. One of three Huskies to play every set this season, Torve has racked up a career high 1343 assists in 114 sets for an impressive 11.78 average. In addition to ranking top-5 in the NSIC and NCAA in assists/set this season, the junior became the first setter since 2008 to record 1000+ assists in a single season and now ranks fourth all-time in career-assists 2860.
Bonus number:
15 – St. Cloud State made its last NCAA Regional in 2004, meaning it's been 15 years since the Huskies last appearance. At that time, Disney Pixar's The Incredibles and The Polar Express were two of the top grossing movies and "My Boo" by Usher and Alicia Keys might have been heard on a few warm up CDs across the nation.
