Former Husky Steve Martinson
Former Husky becomes third professional hockey coach to win 1,000 games

Former St. Cloud State University men's hockey player Steve Martinson recently became just the third professional hockey coach to win 1,000 game during their career. He joins NHL coach Scotty Bowman (1,244 wins) and ECHL/NHL coach John Brophy (1,027 wins) as professional hockey coaches with over 1,000 career wins. Martinson currently ranks as the number one American with most wins as a hockey coach with 1,021 career wins.
A standout player for the Huskies from 1977-81, Martinson scored 60 goals and 64 assists during his collegiate career. He played professionally for 14 seasons, which included stops in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings (1987-88), Montreal Canadiens (1988-90) and Minnesota North Stars (1991-92). His head coaching resume includes several seasons with the San Diego Gulls of the WCHL, the Rockford Ice Hogs (UHL), Elmira Jackals (ECHL), Chicago Express (ECHL) and his current team the Allen Americans (ECHL). Of note, current SCSU head coach Brett Larson served as a player coach along with Martinson in San Diego from 1999-01.
Martinson is one of 34 former SCSU student-athletes to have played games in the NHL since 1931.
