Former Husky Matt Cullen announces retirement after 21 NHL seasons

The 42-year-old forward played 21 seasons in the League, including last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was selected in the 1996 NHL draft by the Anaheim Ducks and played two seasons of college hockey with the Huskies from 1995 to 1997. He later played in the NHL with Anaheim, Florida, Carolina, New York Rangers, Ottawa, Minnesota Wild, Nashville and Pittsburgh.
He was the oldest player in the NHL last season and ranks 19th in league history in games played with 1,516 (second-most among U.S. born players to Chris Chelios). Cullen and former SCSU defensive star Bret Hedican helped Carolina win the Stanley Cup in 2006, and Cullen also helped Pittsburgh win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017.
In his NHL career, Cullen has 266 goals, 465 assists and 731 points. At SCSU, Cullen had 27 goals, 59 assists and 86 career points. He earned All-WCHA and All-WCHA Academic honors for the Huskies in 1996-97.
