St. Cloud State University junior David Hrenak (Povazska Bystrica, Slovakia) has been selected as the Bauer National Collegiate Hockey Conference Goaltender of the Week for games played on Jan. 17-18, 2020.
Hrenak had his best weekend of the season to backstop St. Cloud State to a home sweep of then-No. 8/8 Minnesota Duluth last weekend. He allowed only one goal all series, and none even strength.
In Friday's 2-1 victory, he totaled 32 saves, including 18 in the third period, as SCSU held on for the win. UMD's lone goal of the weekend came on the power play in the first period, but he helped kill off the next four penalties in the game with 11 short-handed saves as he was named First Star of the Game.
A night later, Hrenak recorded his first shutout of the season and eighth of his career, stopping all 27 shots he faced in a 2-0 victory. The eight shutouts tie for second in SCSU program history along with current NHLer Charlie Lindgren, who also had eight shutouts from 2013-16. The L.A. Kings draft pick helped kill off both UMD power plays in the win with four short-handed stops. He nabbed Second Star of the Game on Saturday.
Hrenak totaled 59 saves on 60 shots in the sweep for a .983 save percentage, including 15 short-handed saves to help SCSU's penalty kill go 6-of-7. He posted a 0.50 goals-against average in the two wins, with one whitewash. For the season, he improved to 7-7-4 with a .901 save percentage (was at .890 entering the series) and a 2.84 GAA.
The Huskies, who received votes in the latest USCHO.com poll this week, will travel to NCHC rival Western Michigan on Jan. 24-25 for a pair of league games in Kalamazoo, Mich. Fans can listen to both games on The River 96.7 FM and watch on NCHC.tv/scsu.
