SCSU men's hockey ends regular season with a 6-1 loss at #5 UMD

The St. Cloud State men's hockey team (13-15-6, 10-12-2 NCHC) completed its 2019-20 regular season schedule with a 6-1 loss at #5 Minnesota Duluth (22-10-2, 17-5-2 NCHC) on Saturday, March 7 at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minn.
UMD set the tempo early with a goal at 1:36 of the first period by Justin Richards, which included assists from Louie Roehl and Dylan Samberg. Richards then pushed the Bulldogs' lead to 2-0 at 13:07 of the first with his second goal of the evening. Scott Perunovich and Cole Koepke each had assists on the play.
In the second period, UMD's Koby Bender added a goal at 6:06 of the second to make it 3-0 and then Kobe Roth scored at 15:02 of the second to make it 4-0.
The Huskies broke the shutout at 16:43 of the second with a goal by Micah Miller. Assists on the play were carded by Nick Poehling and Jack Poehling. This was Miller's seventh goal of the season and his 18th point of the year. Nick Poehling notched his 18th assist of the year on the play, which ties him for the team assist lead in 2019-20 along with Jack Ahcan.
UMD replied at 17:05 of the second with another goal by Koby Bender to end the period's scoring at 5-1. In the final period of play, UMD padded its lead to 6-1 with a goal by Luke Loheit at 17:13 of the third period.
In the contest, UMD outshot the Huskies 36 to 30. On the power play SCSU was 0-2 and 3-3 on the penalty kill in the game.
Next weekend the Huskies will begin NCHC postseason play with the first round best-of-three series. SCSU will play at either Western Michigan or Denver pending the results of tonight's final NCHC game in the Mile High City.
