ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team hit a bit of a speed bump Friday evening. After commanding wins over the top teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) South Division last weekend, the Huskies comeback against Upper Iowa came up short in Fayette, Iowa. Despite hot shooting early, St. Cloud State went cold in the final quarters, as the Huskies fell to the Peacocks by a final score of 67-54.
RUFFLING FEATHERS
St. Cloud State wasted no time getting out to a hot start offensively, cruising to an 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Upper Iowa, though, figured some things out in the second quarter, cutting the Huskies lead to 22-20 at the halfway point. The run allowed the Peacocks to take their first lead of the night at 23-22 before St. Cloud State took a 24-23 lead with mere seconds remaining in the half.
In the end, the two teams would conclude the opening minutes deadlocked 24-24 before the Huskies found themselves playing catch up in the third. A sick point run by Upper Iowa gave the home team a 34-29 advantage before Katrina Theis (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) cut the lead to 34-31 at exactly five minutes. The Peacocks, though, stayed hot, extending their lead to 46-39 entering the fourth and final quarter.
The Huskies looked to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to 54-51 on back-to-back baskets from Theis and Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson). St. Cloud State's comeback efforts, though, came up short Friday evening, as the team fell to Upper Iowa by a final score of 67-54.
TOP HUSKIES
- Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) and Katrina Theis (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) were the lone Huskies to score in double-digits Friday night. Evans closed with a team leading 17 points and six assists, while Theis closed the game with 12 points and nine rebounds.
