Huskies hold Beavers to just 25 kills on .101 hitting
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 7 St. Cloud State Volleyball held Bemidji State to hit just .101 in a straight-set Homecoming win on Thursday evening at Halenbeck Hall.
Phebie Rossi and Sam Zimmerman each had five blocks as SCSU totaled 10 on the night. Rossi moved into fifth all-time in total blocks with her five-block, six-kill performance. Zimmerman hit .700 with eight kills on 10 swings, committing a lone attacking error. Makena Hollman added three blocks while Emma Berran and Linsey Rachel had two apiece.
Kenzie Foley delivered a monster night at the pin, putting down a match-high 14 kills on .458 hitting with a team-leading nine digs and four aces. Keely Kurschner and Rachel each scored three times from the service line.
The Huskies hit .295 while outkilling Bemidji State 39 to 25.
Turning Point
St. Cloud State leaned on their defense early, trusting their dominant block to generate strong touches at the net. The Huskies held BSU to eight kills in the first and just five in the second as Zimmerman, Rossi and Hollman combined for 10 blocks through two sets. SCSU's offense headed up in the third, terminating at a .409 hitting percentage to close out the straight-set win.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Chad Braegelmann
"I'm glad we got the W today – it was a good team effort. I was happy to see some of our women be effective offensively and limit errors. Our blocking was good, I liked our body-ball relationship there and our hands did a better job of pressing over. Still, too many errors today. We made 29 errors tonight in three sets, that's just too many. Too many unforced errors, that's not going to be good enough against the best teams in our league."
"I think Kenzie Foley did a better job with her body-ball relationship and shot decisions, being a little more diverse with her shot selections. Sam Zimmerman also did a much better job with nice hand contact, getting on top of the ball, gaining confidence and trusting herself to run an aggressive route each time."
"Our defense did a great job. Serving and blocking were two areas we've been working on – consistently serving tougher and emphasizing blocking. I felt we had a great showing there."
