Huskies fall 84-80 in overtime
DULUTH, Minn. - It was almost the exact same story as the last meeting between the St. Cloud State men's basketball team and the (RV) UMD Bulldogs. Despite a valiant effort by the Huskies, they fell just short, 84-80, to Minnesota Duluth in overtime. All eight Huskies that touched the court added points to the board.
GAME SUMMARY
It was a crazy back a fourth effort by both teams as there were 10 different lead changes and nine times the game was tied during 45 minutes of play. In the opening 20 minutes, the game was in favor of the Bulldogs as they netted the first three points of the game and continued to pack away the baskets as St. Cloud struggled to gain the lead. UMD's defense closed in on St. Cloud's leading scorer, Matthew Willert, holding him to just four points in the first half while the Bulldogs' top scorer, Drew Blair, put away 19 first half points. The Huskies shot .419 from the floor while going 100% from the foul line.
Returning for the second half, the Huskies put in work. After a steal by Joe Mutimer at the 13:22 mark, he found Ryan Bagley who sank a three-point jump shot to give the Huskies the lead. However a few minutes later the Bulldogs rallied back to tie the game at 55 each. St. Cloud continued it's offensive push as a they went up by seven points off a Matthew Willert layup in the paint to lead 67-60. UMD then pushed the momentum back their way to tie the game at 69 apiece. The Huskies were unable to hit a shot in the last few seconds as the game headed into overtime.
Overtime was a back and fourth game. Each team making a basket while the other would responded with a bucket of their own. A contested layup made by Joe Mutimer tied the game at 78 each with 40 seconds left in overtime. However, UMD responded with two baskets off of rebounds to lead 82-80 with nine seconds left. The Huskies were forced to foul to stop the clock, sending the Bulldogs to the foul to hopefully then to make a play. In the end, there just was not enough time as the St. Cloud fell 84-80 in overtime. UMD's Drew Blair scored 39 points for the Bulldogs.
