Team Red comes away with 23-16 win at annual intrasquad match
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Team Red came away with a 23-16 win over Team Black at the 2023 Black & Red Classic as No. 4 St. Cloud State Wrestling kicked off the start of the 2023-24 campaign on Thursday evening at Halenbeck Hall. The match was filled with bonus-point matches, as eight of 12 matches were decided by eight or more points.
Conor Knopick opened the scoring for the black team, scoring a technical fall in the opening bout to give team black a quick 5-0 lead. Team red responded quickly however, as Sam Spencer earned an 8-0 major decision over No. 9 Caleb Meekins to bring the score back to 5-4.
Team black responded on their own, winning three consecutive matches with two coming way via bonus points, as No. 12 Alyeus Craig (4-0 decision), Nolan Throne (8-0 major decision) and No. 1 Nick Novak (9-1 major decision) each came away victorious. The wins would give the black team a 16-4 lead, but it would be the final win of the night for the team, as the red team would sweep the final five matches of the evening.
No. 4 Anthony Herrera began the five-match win streak following intermission by beating Ethan Hendrickson by major decision, 13-2, followed by back-to-back decision victories from Bryce Dagel and Bryce FitzPatrick. At 197, No. 4 Dominic Murphy put points on the scoreboard with a 21-6 technical fall win before Elijah Novak earned a 11-3 major decision at heavyweight to close the match.
In exhibition matches, Colton Bornholdt (6-4 decision) and Cole Glazier (11-0 major decision) earned victories at 149 and 174, respectively.
