Primerano and Halunen score 108 seconds apart to erase deficit, SCSU improves unbeaten streak to seven games
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (8-2-4, 5-1-4 NSIC) came up clutch in winning time, scoring two goals over a span of two minutes to erase a one-goal deficit and beat Northern State (6-5-3, 5-3-2 NSIC), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Husky Stadium. SCSU's leading scorer, junior forward Ellie Primerano (St. Joseph, Mich.) scored the game-tying goal while freshman defender Izzy Halunen (Woodbury, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal to propel the Huskies to victory.
TURNING POINT
After a scoreless first half, Northern State got on the scoreboard first in the 51st minute when Kailyn Poppen scored off a rebound to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. The lead didn't last for long, however, as Primerano and Halunen's scores came 108 seconds apart in the 66th and 68th minutes, respectively.
First, sophomore midfielder Cady Compton (Ankeny, Iowa) fed Primerano down the left side of the field, who worked her way around a few Northern State defenders before attempting a centering pass. Primerano's attempt was blocked, but she was able to get her own rebound and moved just outside the top left corner of the box, where she took a shot towards the goal, beat the Wolves goalie to the far right score to tie the game.
Then, just a couple minutes later, Halunen caused a turnover at midfield and started an attack going the other way. She passed the ball to freshman forward Gabby Hofeld (St. Paul, Minn.) and started a give-and-go, as she found herself all alone at the top right corner of the box. Hofeld fed her back and Halunen let a ripped a shot above the goalie for her first career score and a 2-1 lead.
TOP HUSKIES
SCSU heads back on the road for its next two games, traveling to Marshall to face Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Oct. 25 and Sioux Falls on Sunday, Oct. 27.
