Huskies dominate faceoff dot, get goals from defensemen Josh Zinger and Josh Luedtke
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 12/14 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (6-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) moved to 5-0 in one-score games with a 2-1 win over (RV) Augustana (3-3-0, 0-0-0 CCHA) on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Junior defenseman Josh Zinger's (Red Deer, Alberta) second goal in as many nights in the second period proved to be game-winner, while sophomore goaltender Isak Posch (Umea, Sweden) was strong in net with 26 saves to secure the win.
The Huskies got on the board first with a goal from its senior captain, as defenseman Josh Luedtke (Minnetonka, Minn.) let a wrist shot rip from the slot to go up 1-0 with 3:44 left in the first. Freshman forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) earned the primary assist on the with a touch base at the left dot to feed Luedtke alone in the slot of the score. Sophomore forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) had the secondary assist, as he brought the puck into the offensive zone and kept possession on the wall before passing to Burnevik.
Augustana evened the score at the 4:20 mark of the second period, but the Huskies responded quickly with Zinger's goal just 3:13 later at the 7:33 mark of the period. Junior forward Grant Ahcan (Savage, Minn.) won a puck battle off a rebound and moved the puck back to the point to senior forward Karl Falk (Vasteras, Sweden), who then fed Zinger in front of the blue line and above the left circle who fired a one-timer past the Viking goaltender for a 2-1 lead.
Posch made 13 of his 26 saves in the third period, but the claim down on the Vikings comeback attempts and sealing the Huskies victory.
