Huskies grab 1-0 lead, can’t find equalizer in final period in series finale
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 10 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (6-3-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) jumped out to an early lead but then couldn't hold on in a 2-1 setback to No. 2 Boston College (5-1-0, 0-0-0 HEA) on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Sophomore forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) scored the Huskies lone goal in the first period, his first score of the season.
The Husky sophomore's goal at the 4:59 mark of the first period gave the Huskies its first lead of the weekend. SCSU's forecheck made the play happen, with sophomore forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) and freshman forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) creating a turnover in its offensive zone. Burnevik ended up with the puck behind the Eagle net and then found a streaking Miettinen to the slot, who then fired a shot past the goaltender for the score.
Boston College was able to knot the score up at 1-1 in the second period on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line by defenseman Eamon Powell. Then, at 3:23 of the third period, James Hagens got his stick on a Husky pass attempt, creating a turnover and chance in front of the net for Gabe Perreault, who beat the Husky goaltender to make the score 2-1. SCSU had its chances in the period to tie the score, including 62 seconds of a major penaly to end the game, but couldn't find the back of the net.
