Fourth Quarter Push Leads St. Cloud State Women’s Basketball to Home Win over UMary

Vanzant scores career-high 19 as Huskies pick up fourth win in a row
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (14-7 overall, 11-6 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) used a 22-point fourth quarter to pull away from UMary, winning 58-45 Thursday night at Halenbeck Hall.
After 10 minutes of play the game was tied at 14 and both teams struggled offensively. Both SCSU and the Marauders shot 6-of-14 (42.9%) from the field and turned the ball over six and five times respectively. Neither team was able to get much going in the second period, but the Huskies outscored UMary 12-8 to take a 26-22 lead into the break.
The Huskies shot just 10-of-27 (37.0%) from the field and turned the ball over 12 times in the first half while UMary shot 9-27 (33.3%) and gave the ball away 11 times. Each team made one three-pointer and the teams shot a combined 2-of-12 from downtown.
UMary (16-9, 12-5 NSIC) outscored the Huskies 13-12 in the third quarter to bring itself within one point heading into the fourth quarter. The Huskies turned the ball over seven times in the period and was held to two field goals.
SCSU's offense came awake during the fourth quarter, pouring in 22 points to pull away from the Marauders. The Huskies made 8-of-12 shots from the field including three of their five three pointers in the final frame. Senior guards Makenna Vanzant (Farmington, Ark.) and Morgan Draheim (Hortonville, Wis.) each scored eight fourth quarter points on a combined 5-of-6 from the field including 3-of-3 from three-point land and 3-of-3 from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) contributed six points and four rebounds in the fourth quarter on a perfect 3-of-3 from the field.
The Huskies held reigning NSIC Player of the Week, Lexie Schneider, to just six points on 3-of-7 shooting and one rebound. She was in foul trouble most of the game and picked up her fifth early in the fourth quarter. She came into the game averaging NSIC bests in points (20.9) and rebounds (9.5).

- Vanzant scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting including a perfect 2-of-2 from three. She also tied a game-high five steals, went 5-of-5 from the line and grabbed four rebounds.
- Sawicki scored 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. She also blocked two shots.
- Sophomore guard Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field. She grabbed three rebounds, blocked two shots and made both of her free throw attempts.
- Draheim finished with 10 points and tied the game-high five steals. She made all four of her free throw attempts.
- After the win, SCSU is 20-10 all-time against UMary.
- St. Cloud State led the game in field goal percentage (41.7%-35.7%), three-point percentage (40.0%-11.8%), free throw percentage (93.3%-25.0%), three pointers (4-2), free throws (14-3), total rebounds (11-26—37 - 14-18—32), assists (9-6), steals (13-10) and bench points (23-22).
- UMary led the game in blocks (7-5), points off turnovers (24-14), points in the paint (34-26), second chance points (11-6) and fast break points (5-4),
- The teams tied in field goals (20).
- St. Cloud State's biggest lead of the game was 13 points and held the lead for 33:43.
- Vanzant set career-highs in points (19), field goals (six), free throws (five) and steals (five). She set season-highs in minutes (29) and field goal attempts (11). She has posted back-to-back games with a new career high in points. She has scored in double figures three times this season, grabbed 4+ rebounds in six games and tallied multiple steals in five games including four of the last five. She has made 2+ three pointers in three games including the last two.
- Sawicki posted her fifth double-double of the season and of her career and second in the past three games. She has scored 13+ points in seven games this season including the last three and has grabbed 11+ rebounds in four. She has blocked multiple shots eight times. It is the 11th time she has shot above 50% from the field.
- Eggebrecht stuffed a career-high two shots. She has scored 10+ points in 15 games this season and 37 times in her Huskies career. She has grabbed 3+ rebounds in 10 games and made 2+ free throws in 11.
- Draheim set new career-highs in free throws (four) and steals (five). She has scored 10+ points in nine games this season including three of the last four. She has tallied multiple steals in 13 games.
- Senior forward Jasmine Litt (Pulaski, Wis.) grabbed seven rebounds. She has grabbed 7+ rebounds in two games this season.
- Senior guard Tori Peschel (Sauk Centre, Minn.) grabbed five rebounds. She has recorded five rebounds in 10 games this season including the last six consecutive.
- Senior forward Dru Henning (Mukwonago, Wis.) dished out three assists. She has posted 3+ assists in nine games this season and three straight.
