Huskies drop series opener 5-1 in Columbus
COLUMBUS, Ohio. – No. 11 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (4-5-0, 1-4-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) dropped its series opener against No. 2 Ohio State, 5-1, on Friday evening at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio.
The Buckeyes (6-1-0, 4-1-0 WCHA) scored the lone goal of the first period and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. SCSU responded with its first goal of the game just under three minutes into the second period when freshman forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) skated past all the OSU defenders and beat the goaltender one-on-one to tie the game.

Ohio State took the lead again just over four minutes later with a penalty shot that was awarded after the Huskies covered the puck up in their own crease. The Buckeyes extended their lead to two just 23 seconds into the third period and would go one to add two more to bring the final score to 5-1.

- Mikaelyan scored the Huskies lone goal and led the Huskies in shots on goal, with six.
- Senior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) was credited with the primary assist on the goal.
- Junior forward Payton Holloway (Tomah, Wis.) provided the secondary assist on the goal.
- SCSU moved to 32-65-12 all-time against Ohio State and 15-30-8 all-time against the Buckeyes in Columbus.
- The Huskies moved to 2-5-0 this season against teams ranked/receiving votes and 1-3-0 in away games.
- SCSU went 0-for-1 on the penalty kill and 0-for-4 on the power play. For the season, SCSU is 20-for-27 (74.1%) on the penalty kill and 4-for-26 on the power play (15.4%).
- OSU outshot the Huskies, 29-12 and won 72.7% of the faceoffs and SCSU out blocked the Buckeyes, 8-6.
- Mikaelyan's goal was her fifth of the season, breaking her tie with junior forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) for the team lead.
- Farrell's assist was her fourth of the season which is tied for fourth on the team and the 30th of her career. She now has five points this season.
- Holloway's assist was her fourth of the season which is tied for fourth on the team. She now has five points this season.
- Freshman defender Sydney Lamb (Lombard, Ill.) blocked a career-high three shots.
- Graduate goaltender Jojo Chobak (Chicago, Ill.) made a season-high 35 saves and surpassed 1,500 saves for her career.
