Huskies score twice in in first 12 minutes, tack on a second half goal to win 3-0
BEMIDJI, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (15-2-5, 11-1-3 NSIC) earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament win on Friday morning, beating No. 6 seed Pittsburg State (14-4-2, 9-1-2 MIAA) 3-0 at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, Minn. The Huskies scored twice in the first 12 minutes of the game on goals from junior forward Linsey Trapino (Verona, Wis.) and senior forward Ellie Primerano (Saint Joseph, Mich.) and tacked on a third from Primerano in the second half. Redshirt sophomore Jaylee Strickland (Columbus, Ohio) made three saves to preserve the shutout for SCSU.
With the win, SCSU advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history while setting a program record for wins in a season with its 15th victory.
TURNING POINT
The Huskies jumped out quick, scoring in the sixth minute when junior midfielder Grace Olson (West Des Moines, Iowa) intercepted a pass near midfield and pushed the ball up between two Gorilla defenders, leaving it for Trapino all alone with the goalkeeper as she snuck past to the far side for the score and 1-0 lead. SCSU was ready to attack again in the 12th minute when Primerano had the ball near midfield and worked it up the leftside again for Trapino. She worked her way around multiple defenders and sprinted to the box where she made a centering pass for Primerano out in front for a touch and the score.
The Huskies backline held tall throughout the entire game, limiting Pittsburg State to just three shots on goal and none in the final 20 minutes of the game.
