Grace Olson nets game-winner in 98th minute to send Huskies to Central Region Championship Game
BEMIDJI, Minn. – Junior midfielder Grace Olson (West Des Moines, Iowa) scored an overtime game-winning goal to send St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (16-2-5, 11-1-3 NSIC) to the NCAA Central Region Championship Game in a 2-1 win over Central Missouri (11-6-4, 7-2-3 MIAA) on Sunday afternoon at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, Minn. The win sets up a Sweet 16 matchup with No. 4 seed Washburn.
The Huskies scored first, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when redshirt sophomore forward Gabby Zugel (Plainwell, Mich.) deflected in a centering pass from senior midfielder Brooke Quam (Lakeville, Minn.). SCSU controlled the pace for most of the first period and outshot the Jennies 5-3.
Central Missouri came out attacking in the second half seeking the equalizer but was only able to get two shots on goal. Unfortunately, for the Huskies, the Jennies would tie the score in the 75th minute on a goal from Izzy Joyce. The end of regulation came with the score still 1-1.
In the first overtime period, the Huskies had four total shots compared to just one for the Jennies, and it was Olson, who made a move around a defender in the box and used her left foot to push the ball past the goalkeeper on the far side for the game-winning goal in the 98th minute.
