Halunen’s goal in 90th minute gives Huskies win

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – After controlling the ball for nearly 70 percent of the game, St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (3-3-2, 2-2-1 NSIC) was able to find the back of the net with 17 seconds left in the game to beat Southwest Minnesota State (1-5-2, 1-3-1 NSIC), 1-0, on Friday night at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud. Senior defender Izzy Halunen (Woodbury, Minn.) provided the game-winning score,

TURNING POINT

In a game largely dominated by the Huskies after outshooting the Mustangs, 23-1, and shots on goal, 11-0, SCSU remained determined to find the back of the net. On SCSU's 14^th and final corner kick with less than a minute remaining on the clock, junior midfielder Darby Allen (Minnetonka, Minn.) fired a pass to the box, where Halunen got her head on the ball, which hit the left post and then fell over the goal line for the score.

Halunen scored her first goal of the season with her game-winning score.
Allen recorded her team-leading third assist of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Jaylee Strickland (Columbus, Ohio) posted her third shutout and second victory of the season in net.

NOTES

With the win, SCSU improves to 18-10-4 all-time against Southwest Minnesota State.
The Huskies held the advantage in every offensive category, including corner kicks (14-1), shots (23-1) and shots on goal (11-0).
Halunen scored her first goal of the season and her second career score. It was also her second career game-winning goal.
Allen recorded her third assist of the season with her helper on Halunen's score. Her three assists currently rank tied for third in the NSIC.
Strickland recorded her third shutout of the season and 23^rd of her career.
Three Huskies, Halunen, freshman defender Kelly Sprague (Edina, Minn.) and Strickland played a full 90 minutes in the game.

UP NEXT

SCSU continues its two-game homestand with a home game against Sioux Falls on Sunday, Sept. 27. First kick is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT at Husky Stadium.
