St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey Drops Series Opener to No. 6/5 Denver

Huskies outshoot Pioneers and win faceoff battle but fall 5-1
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (7-10-0, 2-7-0 NCHC) dropped its third consecutive game, falling 5-1 to No. 6/5 Denver (12-5-1, 8-1-0) on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. SCSU gave up the game's first four goals before getting on the scoreboard in the third period.
SCSU outshot the Pioneers 14-11 in the first 20 minutes but found itself down 3-0 after DU scored three goals. The Pioneers then tacked on another goal in the second period to make the score 4-0.
SCSU got on the scoreboard at the 4:56 mark of the third period when junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) finished in front of the net on assists from junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) and freshman forward Noah Urness (Roseau, Minn.). DU then scored to cap the score at 5-1.

- Sophomore goaltender Patriks Berzins (Talsi, Latvia) made 22 saves in the game after entering at the start of the second period.
- With the loss, SCSU moves to 53-62-7 all-time against Denver and 24-25-4 against the Pioneers in St. Cloud.
- On the season, SCSU moves to 0-9-0 when its opponent scores first, 0-8-0 when trailing after the first period and 0-9-0 when trailing after two periods.
- SCSU won the faceoff battle, 31-26, the 13th time in 17 games this season SCSU has won the faceoff battle.
- Gross scored his eighth goal of the season and 21st point with his third period score. He also extended his point streak to five games, scoring in each game since Nov. 21.
- Gross went 15-3 in the faceoff dot, marking the fifth consecutive game and eighth time this season he has won 15+ faceoffs.
- Hall recorded his 12th assist of the season with the primary assist on Gross' goal.
- Urness recorded his fifth assist of the season and his first point since an assist against St. Thomas on Nov. 11.
- Berzins made 22 saves in the game, marking the seventh time this season he has made 20 or more saves in the game.
