Macdonald departs SCSU as the program’s all-time winningest coach after three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer head coach Gretta Macdonald has been named the head coach of Division-I St. Thomas, as announced by the school on Wednesday. The two-time NSIC Coach of the Year (2023, 2025) departs the Huskies as the winningest coach in program history after leading SCSU to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and the team's first ever conference championship.
A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
"We are excited for Coach Macdonald and her family for this new opportunity'" said Director of Athletics Holly Schreiner. "During Coach Macdonald's time at SCSU, she has transformed the women's soccer program, and their recent success is evidence of hard work and dedication she has put forth in the program. We wish her the best in the future."
"Our family would like to thank the entire SCSU community for a memorable and formative 12 years," said Macdonald. "In my tenure, I'm proud to have had the opportunity to work with amazing student-athletes and staff who have helped elevate Huskies Soccer to a nationally competitive program."
In 12 seasons as head coach and 11 on the field (no season in 2020 due to pandemic), Macdonald has guided the program to new heights, collecting a program record 102 wins with a 102-72-36 record, three NCAA Tournament appearances, one conference championship and four 10-win seasons. The Huskies current stretch of three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances are the first three ever in program history, while its run to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2025 marked its first two NCAA victories. SCSU captured the program's first conference title in 2023 when they won the 2023 NSIC regular season championship.
In Macdonald's tenure, 50 Huskies have earned All-NSIC accolades and 15 have been named to All-Region teams with senior midfielder Brooke Quam (Lakeville, Minn.) becoming the program's first-ever All-American when she was named to the D2CCA All-America Third Team in 2025. Her teams have set numerous program season records, including most wins (16, 2025), best winning percentage (.771) most conference wins (11, 2025) and most shutouts (13) in 2025. In the classroom, 144 Huskies have earned NSIC All-Academic recognition, while 21 have earned the distinguished NSIC Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award and 16 have earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors. Additionally, SCSU has had two women earn the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Graduate Scholarship, with Maria Witte earning the honor in 2019 and Karlie Valdez in 2023.
In 2025, SCSU posted arguably its best season in program history, reaching the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season, the Sweet 16 for the first time ever and advanced to the NSIC championship game for the second time in program history and the first time since 2011. The Huskies had a league-high and program-best eight all-conference honorees, led by Quam and senior forward Ellie Primerano (Saint Joseph, Mich.) being named to the All-NSIC First Team. Quam was named NSIC Midfielder of the Year while Primerano became the third player in program history to earn four all-conference honors and the first in program history to earn three first team all-conference honors.
The Huskies returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2024 following an 11-4-5 season. SCSU reached 10+ wins for the second consecutive season and eighth time overall, with its first time with back-to-back 10-win seasons since 2010-11. The Huskies set a program record with an 11-game unbeaten streak and advanced to the NSIC Tournament for the seventh time in the last nine seasons played. Six Huskies earned All-NSIC recognition while three earned all-region honors.
Macdonald guided SCSU to its first-ever conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023. The Huskies captured the NSIC Regional Season Championship after a 10-2-2 mark in league play while Macdonald was named the NSIC Coach of the Year and junior forward Linsey Trapino (Verona, Wis.) was named the NSIC Freshman of the Year. SCSU totaled a league-high and program-record eight All-NSIC performers, while five earned all-region honors.
SCSU first reached double-digit victories under Macdonald in the 2019 season, when the Huskies posted a 12-5-3 overall record and a 10-3-2 record in conference play, which set then-records for most conference wins and was the second-most wins charted by the Huskies in a single season.
