SCSU picks up ninth straight win
Moorhead, MN – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (16-5, 13-2 NSIC) picked up their ninth straight win with a 77-64 victory over MSU Moorhead Friday evening. SCSU closed the game on an extended 26-15 run after the Dragons battled back from a 19-point deficit to tie the game.
The Dragons opened the game by scoring on their first two possessions to take a very early 5-2 lead. St. Cloud State clamped on defense as they generated a five-minute scoring drought for MSUM to lead 9-5. SCSU found an offensive groove as they were hot from three but were also aggressive in getting the rim and drawing fouls. The Huskies would find a rhythm across the board as they shot 50% from the field, 50% from three on six makes, and went 11/14 at the free throw line in the first half. Strong offensive play partnered with the stout defense led to the Huskies slowly building up a lead. Lee Marks III extended the lead with a driving left-handed layup that he finished for the and-one. The other end saw Will Brands come away with a steal and as the halfcourt offense set-up he would drill a slot three while being fouled for the four-point play. The free throw by Brands extended the lead to 16. SCSU pushed a lead as big as 19 points in the first half, but MSUM had a strong close to the half to cut the lead down to 14 at the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Dragons carried over their momentum with rejuvenated defense and energy. They would ultimately battle all the way back to tie the game at 49 at the 10:42 mark of the second half as the Huskies were without a field goal in the half. Anish Ramlall would knock down a pair of free throws to un-tie the game. Following a defensive stop, Luke Winkel forced a switch on the offensive end, sized up his defender, and then drilled a massive three on the wing for the first field goal of the half for SCSU. Another stop by the Huskies saw Marks III corral the rebound and outlet the ball to Winkel who went coast to coast and finished a left-handed reverse layup as the Huskies re-found their groove. St. Cloud State continue to rebuild their lead, mainly from the free throw line. A left-handed hook shot by Wyatt Hawks pushed the lead back up to double digits with 3:45 left in the game. The Huskies would lead by 10+ points the rest of the way as they ultimately came away with a 77-64 win. With only six made field goals in the half, free throws were critical as they went 21/26 in the second half.
