Huskies golf returns to the NSIC for the first time since 2019
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Golf was picked to finish tenth out of eleven teams in the annual Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. SCSU's golf program returns for the first time in seven years. Huskies have nine new men competing on their roster in 2026.

The Huskies are bringing in three transfers and six Freshman for the Fall of 2026. Cameron Kaye (Jr.|Phoenix, AZ) highlights the team being selected as their preseason player to watch. Kaye is entering his junior season after one season with Mesa Community College and Paradise Valley Community College. Kaye has three top-10's in his collegiate career along with being named team captain with Mesa CC.
"Cameron is a very mature player who understands his game," said first-year head coach Trey Fessler when asked about Cam. "He will be a leader on our team and help elevate everyone around him."
The Huskies will also be led by a pair of Sophomores, Carter Hillukka (South Dakota School of Mines) and Noah Klapmeier (North Central University). The six Freshman include Payton Carr (Little Falls), Tate Hellend (Albertville, MN), Owen Hoehn (Holmen, WI), Quinn Opiola (St. Michael, MN), William Spence (Rogers, MN), and Carter Whitworth (Detroit Lakes, MN).
The Huskies are led by Trey Fessler who's in his first season with the team. Fessler is an accomplished collegiate and professional golfer who earned NJCAA First Team All-America honors in 2020 and PGA Tour status in Latin America from 2021-23. In the professional ranks, Fessler has won 23 events, including the 2025 Minnesota PGA Golf Champions and 2025 Minnesota PGA Assistant Championship tournaments. He is currently a teaching professional at Albany Golf Club.
When asked about his new team Fessler had this to say, "We are a new program, being able to build a program from scratch is a great way to build a foundation. We are beyond happy to be back and get going again. We are hoping to have a successful opening season."
St. Cloud State will kick off their regular season at the Fall Brawl hosted by Minnesota State-Mankato on September 13th at Troy Burne in Hudson, WI.
SCSU Golf History
Before returning in 2026, St. Cloud State previously sponsored men's golf for 84 seasons from 1931-32 to 2019-20 (no competition from 1941-46 due to World War II) and women's golf for 45 seasons from 1975-76 to 2019-20. The men's team won 11 conference championships, including the 2013 and 2014 NSIC titles, competed in 13 consecutive NCAA regionals from 2002-14 and advanced to the NCAA Championships twice, earning a 16th place finish in 2004 and a 17th place finish in 2006. The women's team competed in three NCAA regionals from 2002-04 and advanced to the NCAA Championships once, earning an eighth-place finish in 2004.
