Michael Coonen returns for his fifth year coaching the sprints, hurdles and relays at St. Cloud State University and his third serving as the Recruiting Coordinator for the Husky Track & Field/Cross Country program. As a coach for the Huskies, Coonen has coached 36 NCAA DII National Meet Qualifiers and 35 All-NSIC selections, including five NSIC Champions. He has also coached athletes to nine USTFCCCA All-North Central Region selections. His sprinters have broken the school records in the Men’s Indoor 60m dash, Men's Indoor 600m dash, Women’s Indoor 200m dash and Women’s 4x100m Relay. Most recently, in 2014, he led SCSU’s George Kawalawu to an All-American performance in the Indoor 60m Dash. In 2011 he helped guide the Men’s Track and Field team to their highest conference finish in 31 years.
Prior to SCSU, Coach Coonen was extremely successful as a Graduate Assistant at Emporia State University in Emporia, KS. He coached the National Runner-Up in the NCAA DII Indoor 200m dash. He coached three NCAA DII All-Americans, ten individual and one relay National Meet Qualifiers. His men swept the sprint events at the 2010 MIAA Indoor Championships. He coached his sprinters to two school records, ten ESU Top-Five All-Time performances and eight All-MIAA selections.
Coonen spent two years as an Assistant Coach with St. Cloud Technical High School in St. Cloud, MN. His Tigers broke five Central Lakes Conference records as well as eight school records. In his two years with Tech he qualified seven individual and five relay teams for the Minnesota High School State Track and Field Meet. Many of his former athletes have gone on to have successful collegiate track and field careers.
As an athlete for the SCSU Huskies, Coonen was a short-sprint specialist, running primarily the 100m and 200m races and relays. He was a team captain both his junior and senior year. He was a Five-Time All-Conference selection in the now defunct North Central Conference (NCC).
A native of Appleton, WI, Coonen was a standout athlete at Xavier High School. He received both his Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training and Masters of Science in Sport Administration from St. Cloud State University. Coonen holds a USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification along with a USTFCCCA Technical Coaching Certification.
Coonen resides in Sauk Rapids, MN with his wife, Sally and his dog, Nitschke.
