Rochester, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team took the field at 10 a.m. this morning to take on the University of Mary in game one of the 2013 NSIC Softball Tournament. The Huskies came away with a 2-1 victory over the Marauders and will advance to take on Minnesota State University at 2 p.m. today.
St. Cloud State entered today's match-up with a 27-24 overall record, and finished 12-12 in conference action. The University of Mary held a 24-17 overall mark and ended the conference season holding a 13-11 record. The Marauders took two of three games from the Huskies earlier this season.
Both teams came to play this morning as the game remained scoreless through the first four innings. Taylor Thomas (Fontana, Calif.) followed up with a two-run home run over the center field fence, giving the Huskies a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth the Marauders attempted to turn it around. With back-to-back hits by Hadley and Rodriguez following a Husky fielding error, the University of Mary loaded the bases with no outs. Kelly Olson completed a force out play from short to home to get the first St. Cloud State out without allowing a run to score. McKnight drew a walk to score Brown for U-Mary's first run of the game. With one out and the bases still loaded, Kelly Franks struck out the next two batters to get the Huskies out of the inning and still on top, 2-1.
Kelsie Fitch (Carver) led off in the top of the seventh with a base hit and was bunted over by Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Colo), but the Huskies were unable to capitalize. The Huskies held the Marauders scoreless in the bottom of the seventh and secured a 2-1 victory.
