Huskies Softball rebounds with 2-1 win over Upper Iowa in NISC/U.S. Bank Tournament

Sioux Falls, S.D. – St. Cloud State senior Kelsie Fitch drove in the winning run in the top of the seventh inning to keep the Huskies hopes alive in the NSIC/U.S. Bank Softball Tournament with a 2-1 win over Upper Iowa University Thursday evening at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls, S.D.
St. Cloud State improved to 30-26 overall and will face the University of Sioux Falls at 10 a.m. Friday, May 1. The Huskies and Cougars opened the tournament Thursday morning with USF posting an 8-4 win. Upper Iowa was eliminated from the tournament with the loss and finish the season 23-30.
Fitch, pinch hitting, singled in Brooke Klontz for the winning run in the top of the seventh inning.
Upper Iowa was first on the scoreboard as Whitney Williams scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning.
Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the sixth when pinch runner Brianna Hightshoe scored on an Upper Iowa fielding error.
Fitch and first base Jessica Goerger provided the Huskies two hits in the game. Senior pitcher Kelly Franks (16-6) threw a complete game, giving up six hits, striking out ten and walking two batters.
Upper Iowa finished the game with six hits and Shelby Crist went two-for-three for the Peacocks. Brooke Redmond pitched a complete game, giving up two hits, one earned run, struck out three batters and walked one hitter.
Goerger and Fitch powered the Huskies offense in the first day of tournament action. In two games, Goerger went three-for-six at the plate and drove in a run. Fitch was two-for-four, with three rbi and a double. Designated player Tricia DeBoer had two hits in five at bats and scored a run.
Franks pitched 12 innings and struck out 22 batters.
