Robert Waxlax began his association with SCSU as a student-athlete in 1952. That year he played football for the Huskies. After a stint at Brainerd J.C. and in the Air Force, he returned to SCSU in 1956, quarterbacked the Husky football team and competed in track and field until 1958.
He has a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a minor in English Literature. He lettered three times in football and twice in track and field at SCSU. He was president of the SCSU Letterman’s Club during the 1957-58 school year.
Bob Waxlax
Following his graduation from SCSU, Waxlax coached and taught for several years at the high school and collegiate level. He also obtained masters and doctorate degrees.
He returned to SCSU in 1970 as a professor in physical education and head cross country and track and field coach. During his 15 years of coaching cross country and 18 years of coaching track, his teams own nine conference titles (eight in cross country alone) and were conference runner-up ten times. He coached 23 All-Americans and three National Champions. The 1983 cross country team remains the most successful in SCSU history. That year the Huskies won the NCC Championship, won the region meet and finished second at the National Championships. He earned NCC Coach of the Year honors in 1983 (cross country) and 1988 (track and field).
He received the 1984 NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association Distinguished Service Award. In 1985, he was an assistant coach of the National Junior track and field team and in 1986 assisted the North Team at the U.S. Olympic Festival. Along the way, he chaired the NCAA Division II Track and Field Rules Subcommittee, was president and vice president of the NCAA Division II Track Coaches Association, was the Cross Country National Championships Meet Director, and a District Representative of the NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association. Waxlax retired from SCSU in 2000.
