Haviland and Sprague score first career goals in defeat

MARQUETTE, Mich. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (0-1-0, 0-0-0 NSIC) dropped its season-opening match against Northern Michigan (1-0-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC), 3-2, on Friday afternoon in Marquette, Mich. The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the second half before the Wildcats responded with three goals to grab the lead and victory.

TURNING POINT

SCSU took a 2-0 lead in the 69^th minute when freshman defender Kelly Sprague's (Edina, Minn.) left footed shot from outside the box found the top right corner. Northern Michigan captured momentum soon after, however, scoring three goals in an eight-minute period to take a 3-2 lead and eventually, the game.

TOP HUSKIES

Sophomore midfielder Laney Haviland (West Des Moines, Iowa) and Sprague each scored their first career goals in the game.
Sophomore midfielder Gigi Fiorelli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and senior midfielder Cady Compton (Ankeny, Iowa) each had assists on the Huskies' goals.

NOTES

With the loss, SCSU is now 7-9-1 against Northern Michigan.
Haviland netted her first career goal while Fiorelli recorded her first career assist as the duo paired up for the Huskies' first goal of the season in the 29^th minute.
Sprague scored her first career goal in the 69^th minute on a left-footed blast from outside the box.
Compton recorded her fourth career assist and 12^th career point on Sprague's goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Zoe Fujino (Palatine, Ill.) saw action for the second time in her career and made her first career start in net for the Huskies. She made four saves in the game.
Four Huskies made either their collegiate or SCSU debuts in the game, with Sprague and freshman midfielder Abby Artlip (Muskego, Wis.) making their first collegiate appearances while junior forward Arianna Harrison (Bennett, Colo.) and senior forward Sydney Johnson (White Bear Lake, Minn.) made saw their first action as Huskies.
After playing a full slate in 23 of 24 games last season, junior defender Izzy Halunen (Woodbury, Minn.) played a full 90 minutes in the season opener.

UP NEXT

SCSU will continue its two-game road trip to open the season on Sunday when the Huskies face Michigan Tech on Sunday, August 30. First kick from Houghton is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. CT.
