Trapino and Haviland find the back of the net, Sherman records first career win

HOUGHTON, Mich. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NSIC) earned its first win of the 2026 season with a 3-0 win over Michigan Tech (0-2-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon in Houghton, Mich. Sophomore midfielder Laney Haviland (West Des Moines, Iowa) scored the game's first goal, which ended up becoming the game-winner, in the 16^th minute, while senior forward Linsey Trapino (Verona, Wis.) scored a pair of second half goals to secure the victory.

Head coach Maggie Sherman earned her first career victory in the game, while senior goalkeeper Avery Weaver (McFarland, Wis.) made four saves in her first start and first victory in net for the Huskies.

TURNING POINT

SCSU took a 1-0 lead early in the game on Haviland's second goal of the weekend in the 16^th minute. Trapino played the ball down the left side of the field and made a centering pass towards the box, which deflected off a MTU defender and right to Haviland, who kicked the ball to the lower left corner for the score and early lead.

With the game still in the balance, the Huskies doubled their lead early in the second half in the 49^th minute. Junior midfielder Darby Allen (Minnetonka, Minn.) intercepted a Michigan Tech pass and kicked the ball up the field for Trapino, who made a move around a defender, and beat the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. Trapino then supplied the dagger in the 90^th minute, making the score 3-0.

Trapino scored two goals to lead the offensive charge for the Huskies.
Haviland provided the game-winning goal in the first half, scoring for the second time in as many games this season.
Weaver got the start in net and made four saves to record her first career victory.

NOTES

With the win, SCSU is now 4-6-2 all-time against Michigan Tech.
Sherman earned her first career win as SCSU head coach in the victory.
Trapino scored her first and second goals of the season while posting her first career two-goal game.
The pair of scores were the 21^st and 22^nd of Trapino's career, as she moves to a tie for fourth place on the all-time goals list in program history. Additionally, her 56 career points ranks sixth all-time in program history.
Haviland scored her second career goal in the first half.
Weaver recorded her first career win and first career shutout in her first career appearance as a Husky and first since playing for Western Illinois in the 2023-24 season.
Weaver and freshman midfielder Mariah Tita (Shakopee, Minn.) each made their SCSU debuts in the game.
Senior midfielder Cady Compton (Ankeny, Iowa) played a full 90 minutes in the game.

UP NEXT

SCSU will finish its nonconference slate on Saturday, Sept. 5 against Minnesota Duluth in its home opener at 1:00 p.m. CT.
