Maple Grove, Minn., received a bachelor's degree from SCSU in 1969 and a master's in 1990. He competed in football and baseball at SCSU from 1964-1969. He played football for two seasons and was a defensive starter for the Huskies. A pitcher, he lettered four years as a member of the baseball team. He captained the 1968 and 1969 Husky baseball squads. He was a three-time Northern Intercollegiate All-Conference pick, and an NAIA All-American in 1969. The Huskies won the NIC Championship in 1965, 1967 and 1969. In 1969, SCSU placed third at the NAIA National Tournament. In 1968, the Huskies led the nation in team earned run average with a 1.26 team ERA. Wayne still holds SCSU career records for complete games with 19, innings pitched with 218 and shutouts with five. Wayne was drafted by the Minnesota twins in 1969 and assigned to the St. Cloud Rox where he played briefly before being called to Army National Guard Active Duty. Wayne has spent his professional life as a coach and teacher. He has been a classroom teacher, a staff development specialist and is currently an assistant principal at Minnetonka Middle School East. He has coached football, basketball and cross country. A native of Fridley, Minn., Wayne and his wife Susan have three sons.
