#15 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Edged by NMU, 6-2

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #15 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (12-9-0, 9-5-0 WCHA) suffered a tough 6-2 loss against non-conference rival Northern Michigan University (7-10-3, 2-9-3 CCHA) on Friday, Jan. 4 at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
This marked the third consecutive loss for the Huskies against NMU, and SCSU will attempt to get back on track on Saturday, Jan. 5 with the second game of the series against the Wildcats. Game time at the NHEC in St. Cloud, Minn. is slated for 7:07 p.m.
The Huskies opened the scoring on Jan. 4 with a goal by senior forward Ben Hanowski at 10:45 of the first period. Assists on the play were notched by rookie forward Jonny Brodzinski and senior forward Drew LeBlanc. This marked Hanowski's seventh goal of the season and it moves him within three points of SCSU's 100-point club.
LeBlanc now has 23 assists this season for the Huskies and he continues to lead the nation in assists this year with an average of 1.10 assists per game. LeBlanc also maintained his point scoring streak, which now stands at 10 games going into the rematch against NMU on Jan. 5.
SCSU's offensive domination was short-lived as NMU charged back in the second period with a goal by Reed Seckel at 2:17. NMU's Scott Macaulay added his squad's second goal with a marker at 2:58 of the second to make it 2-1.
The Huskies rallied later in the period with a goal by junior forward Cory Thorson, who was assisted on his seventh goal of the season by sophomore forward Nick Oliver. NMU then broke the 2-2 deadlock with the eventual game winner at 16:21, with a power play goal by Ryan Daugherty.
In the third period, NMU iced the game with three unanswered goals to make the final 6-2. Seckel notched his second goal of the evening at 1:10 of the third followed by a goal from CJ Ludwig at 11:49. NMU capped the evening at 17:38 of the third period with a goal by Kyle Follmer.
On the night, NMU outshot the Huskies 26-23. Rookie netminder Rasmus Reijola made the start for SCSU and posted 20 saves in the contest. Jared Coreau was the goalie of record for the Wildcats with 21 saves to his credit. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-5 and NMU was 1-of-2 in the game,
