Bismarck, N.D. - St. Cloud State women's soccer team started their weekend on the road traveling to the University of Mary Saturday for a match against the Marauders. The Huskies were behind early but came back to win 3-2 in double overtime.
U-Mary went up on the Huskies just 1:22 into the game as Michelle McGeary shot right to the middle of the goal for the score.
This was the only goal scored in the first period of play with the Huskies outshooting the Marauders by a margin of six to four.
St. Cloud was able to make it on the board at the 58:45 mark on a header by sophomore Michelle Cornell to the top right corner of the net for the 1-1 tie. Cornell's header came off a corner kick by sophomore Faith Bila. This was Cornell's first goal of the season.
Mary then regained the lead at 61:20 beating the Huskies defenders down the right sideline for the unassisted goal by Mykala Benjamin.
The Marauders had not seen anything yet as freshman Naomi Kolhoff tied the game up 2-2 at the 79:13 mark. Kolhoff shot right in front of the net off an initial shot by junior Kara Espinosa that was blocked.
A 2-2 tie at the end of regulation sent the game into overtime. Mary put up two shots on goal but the Huskies brought the ball down the field on the counter attack with Kolhoff shooting from 17 yards out on the left hash mark putting the game away just 59 seconds into the second overtime. Senior Kara Dahmen recorded the assist.
St. Cloud outshot U-Mary by a final margin of 25-14.
Sophomore Brittany Plombon recorded two saves for the Huskies in goal, while the Marauders' Shelby Buttron tallied nine. With the win Plombon improves her record to 6-4-2 on the season.
"I am very happy with our play today," said head coach Becky McCabe.
"We had tons of chances to score today and need to find ways to make those chances count, but overall a great win for us. Very proud of this team and their effort."
St. Cloud State (6-4-2, 3-4-1 NSIC) will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 13 as they make their way to Minot State rounding out their road trip. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
