Huskies Earn First WCHA Conference Championship in 4-2 Victory Over Wisconsin

Madison, Wis. – The #8 St. Cloud State men's hockey team (21-13-1, 18-8-1 WCHA) traveled to Madison this weekend for their final WCHA regular season series defeating #14 Wisconsin (16-12-7, 12-8-7 WCHA) 4-2 on Friday, March 8 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
With the win the Huskies are the 2012-13 WCHA Conference champs and clinched the #1 seed in the playoffs. This is the Huskies first ever WCHA Conference Championship. The victory moved SCSU's first place point total to 37 on the season, which keeps the Huskies two points ahead of second place Minnesota and North Dakota (35 points).
SCSU went down 1-0 to the Badgers late in the first period as Wisconsin scored on a power-play advantage.
The Huskies' Jonny Brodzinski put them on the board tying the game up 1-1 on a power-play at the 10:40 mark of the second period. Assists were charted to Drew LeBlanc and Jimmy Murray on the goal. This extended LeBlanc's assists to 34 on the season.
Wisconsin came back late in the second taking a 2-1 lead into the second intermission of the game.
SCSU outshot Wisconsin 11-to-10 in the second period.
The third period was controlled by the Huskies from the start as Brodzinski scored his second goal of the game at the 1:11 mark to tie it up 2-2 shooting the puck right over the right shoulder of Wisconsin's goalie. Murray and Nic Dowd assisted on the goal with their 10th and 22nd respectively. Brodzinski's second goal of the game was also his 19th of the season.
At the 16:25 mark of the third it was Nick Jensen earning his fourth goal of the season taking the Huskies to a 3-2 lead over the Badgers. Andrew Prochno was charted with the assist on the goal.
In the final minute at the 19:05 mark LeBlanc fired a shot off from the blue line on an empty net for a 4-2 victory over the Badgers with an assist from Prochno, which is his 21st assist of the season.
In the game, UW outshot SCSU 28-25. Ryan Faragher made 26 saves in the contest for SCSU and gained his 20th win of the season. Joel Rumpel made 21saves in the game for Wisconsin. On the power play, SCSU was 1-of-5 and UW was 1-of-3.
St. Cloud State and Wisconsin will return to action Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum for game two of the WCHA final regular season series. The drop of the puck is set for 7:07 p.m.
