#5/6 Colgate edges #6/7 St. Cloud State, 3-1

In a battle between two top 10 men's college hockey programs, the #6/7 St. Cloud State University (0-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) lost a close 3-1 decision to #5/6 Colgate University (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) in the Huskies' 2014-15 regular season opener at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. on Oct. 10.
Colgate posted a 2-0 lead in the first period and managed to hang on for the 3-1 victory despite being outshot 34-23 by the Huskies. The Raiders scored first in the contest with a marker by Joe Wilson at 9:26 with assists from Mike Borkowski and Jake Kulevich.
Evan Peterson pushed the score to 2-0 with his even-strength marker at 11:44 of the first period with assists from Dan Gentzler and Andrew Black.
The Huskies broke the shutout in the second period with a power play tally by junior Joey Benik, who was assisted on the play by Jonny Brodzinski and rookie Patrick Russell. The point was Russell's first as a collegiate player while Brodzinski now has 81 career points in his first three seasons with the Huskies.
In the final period, Colgate iced the decision with a goal by Kyle Baun at 6:57. Assists on the goal were credited to John Lidgett and Ryan Johnston of Colgate.
In the nets, Charlie Lindgren was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 20 saves in the game. Charlie Finn added 33 saves and the victory between the pipes for the Raiders.
On the power play, SCSU was 1-of-5 and it was a perfect 3-of-3 on the penalty kill in the contest.
