Huskies fall in shootout 1-0
The #14/15 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (4-5-1, 1-2-1-0 NCHC) grabbed another league point on Satuday, Nov. 15 thanks to a 1-1 decision at Western Michigan University (3-6-1, 1-4-1-1 NCHC) in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Broncos scored the extra point in the contest on the strength of their 1-0 edge in the post-game shootout.
A classic NCHC defensive showdown, the Huskies scored their lone goal at 15:29 of the second period with an even strength marker by junior forward Kalle Kossila. He was assisted on the play by senior blueliner Andrew Prochno and freshman forward Patrick Russell. This was Kossila's second goal of the season, while Prochno and Russell each posted their fifth assist of the year on the play.
In the third period, WMU's Will Kessel tied the game with his goal at 2:57. The lone assist on the play was posted by Fredrik Tiffels.
SCSU's defense and goaltending was suberb throughout the evening as the Huskies only allowed five shots in the first period and four shots in the second period. Huskies' goalie Charlie Lindgren came up big in the third period with 11 saves to keep the game even. On the night, Lindgren had 22 saves and WMU goalie Lukas Hafner had 21 saves.
In the OT session, both teams chalked up two shots on net. Much like the game, the shootout also went in extra sessions. After the first three players from each squad missed. The next two shooters for both teams missed before Josh Pitt notched the winner in the sixth round for the Broncos.
SCSU will return to action on Nov. 21-22 for a pair of home dates at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center against North Dakota. For complete ticket information, please visit www.scsutickets.com or call 1-877-SCSUTIX.
