SCSU jumps out to 5-1 lead, beats Boston College despite being outshot 46-25
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After a tough first game of the series, St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (2-3-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) responded in a big way, defeating No. 16/15 Boston College (1-2-0, 0-0-0 HEA), 5-3, on Saturday evening at the Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Five different Huskies found the back of the net while sophomore goaltender Yan Shostak (Minsk, Belarus) was solid in net, making a career-high 43 saves to turn away the Eagles.
The Huskies came out of the gates on the jump, outshooting the Eagles 12-5 in the first period and scoring twice. First, a pair of transfers teamed up to light the lamp for the Huskies when senior forward Charlie Lurie (Minnetonka, Minn.) carried the puck to the middle of the ice before feeding senior forward Jake Southgate (North Battleford, Saskatchewan) at the blue line on the right wing. Southgate was able to out-skate the Eagle defenders to let a shot go from the right dot, beating the goaltender far side for the first goal of the game. The Huskies then doubled their lead in the final minute of the period on a played made by one of its captains. SCSU dumped the puck behind BC's net and senior forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) chased it down, won a stick battle and backhanded a pass to the slot that found freshman defenseman Darels Uljanskis (Riga, Latvia). The freshman blue liner wasted no time, firing a wrister past two defenders and the BC goalie for the score and 2-0 lead.
SCSU extended its lead once again, this time on the power at 5:52 of the second period when sophomore defenseman Finn McLaughlin (Canmore, Alberta) scored his first career goal. Running the point, McLaughlin and sophomore forward Noah Urness (Roseau, Minn.) played catch at the blue line until McLaughlin was ready to rip a one-timer from a stride inside the blue line that went top right for the score. BC scored at the near midpoint of the period, but SCSU responded just 22 seconds later with a goal of their own to push the lead back to three at 4-1. On a rush play, sophomore forward Jamison Sluys (Point Roberts, Wash.) possessed the puck at the right dot of the offensive zone and past it through traffic to the left circle to a streaking junior forward Thor Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn.)
The Eagles put the pressure on in the final two periods, registering 41 shots on goal in the final 40 minutes compared to just 12 for the Huskies. However, it was the Huskies who scored first in the final period to seemingly put the lead out of reach for BC. Sophomore forward Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Minn.) won a puck battle behind the net and moved the puck back to the blue line for senior defenseman Jacob Napier (Lancaster, N.Y.), who kept the puck moving to Uljanskis, who drew the defense to the middle of the ice. With backs turned, Uljanskis fed Roed on the back door for a shot from the right dot that found the back of the net for the 5-1 lead.
Boston College kept pushing in the game's final minutes, and even had a 6-on-3 opportunity at one point, but Shostak was able to keep the Eagles at bay, making 18 of his career-high 43 saves in the final period to seal the victory.
