Men's basketball advances to quarterfinals of NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament with 86-75 win over Sioux Falls

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament following an 86-75 first round win over the University of Sioux Falls Wednesday night at Halenbeck Hall.

St. Cloud State will play Winona State, a 67-56 winner over Minot State on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Pentagon, Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Huskies collected their 20th win of the season, and tenth in the 17-year career of Kevin Schlagel, and head into the quarterfinals with a 20-7 record. The University of Sioux Falls season ends with a 15-12 record.
Junior center James Fort (South Haven) was impressive in the win with 17 points on eight-of-ten shooting , three blocked shots and four dunks. In less than a minute span late in the game Fort sealed the win with a dunk, steal and layup to put the Huskies ahead 81-75 with 1:51 left in the game.
Sophomore guard Jordan Poydras (De Pere, Wis.) collected his first collegiate double-double with 13 points and a career high ten assists.
St. Cloud State senior forward Matt Craggs (Kimberly, Wis.) led all players with 29 points. He was nine-of-11 from the field, made three three-point baskets and went eight-of-nine from the free throw line.
Senior guard Damarius Cruz (Plymouth) scored 19 points, made three three-point baskets, had four assists and three steals.
The Huskies shot 53.4 percent from the field and equaled a season high with 21 assists. St. Cloud State made 17-of-21 free throw attempts and scored 35 points off 20 Sioux Falls turnovers.
Sioux Falls guard Charles Ward scored 17 points, all in the first half, had a nasty fall late in the half and did not play after the intermission. Bryan Kielpinski had 14 points and Mack Johnson and Mahlon Jones each scored 13 points.
The Cougars shot 47.5 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Huskies 38-23 as four players had five or more rebounds led by Jordan Stotts with seven.
The Huskies and Cougars played a back and forth game in the first half with St. Cloud State taking a 32-25 lead with just under six minutes to play. A 9-0 Sioux Falls run put the Cougars ahead 34-32 and USF took a 44-40 lead into halftime.
A pair of Matt Craggs free throws gave the Huskies a 47-46 lead that St. Cloud State built into a ten point lead, 75-65 with seven minutes left in the game. A 10-2 run by the Cougars pulled the visiting team to within two points, 77-75 with 3:59 to go when Fort put together that winning sequence.
Notes: The second NCAA Division II Central Region ranking came out today and the Huskies jumped two spots to #8 in the poll. Minnesota State University is #1, Winona State #5 and MSU Moorhead #10. The Huskies went 14-1 on their home court this season. Schlagel owns a 341-156 career record following the win.
