Dowd Goal Lifts Huskies to 4-3 OT Win Over Notre Dame

St. Cloud State University Hobey Baker candidate Nic Dowd added another page to his impressive resume with the Huskies (22-10-5) as he scored the game winning goal in the Huskies' 4-3 overtime decision against the University of Notre Dame (23-15-2) in the first round of play at the 2014 NCAA Division I West Regional in St. Paul on March 29.
After skating to a 3-3 draw after the first three periods, Dowd charted the game winner at 17:21 of the OT session, which included a solo assist from linemate David Morley. The goal was Dowd's 22nd of the season, while the assist was Morley's 23rd of the year.
The Huskies rallied big in the extra session, as they posted 16 shots on goal in 17:21 of play, while Notre Dame was limited to six shots on goal - including an epic save by SCSU goalie Ryan Faragher on an Irish breakaway attempt by Vince Hinostroza.
The overtime offensive charge for the Huskies contrasted to the first three periods of play that saw the Huskies being outshoot by Notre Dame 36-12. Overall, Notre Dame outshot SCSU 42-28 in the game as Faragher made 39 saves on the night.
SCSU's Ryan Papa opened the game's scoring in the first period with his sixth goal of the season at 6:54. Assists on the play were added by Kalle Kossila nad Jonny Brodzinski.
The Irish tied the game at 1-1 at 10:30 of the first period with a marker by Bryan Rust. Andy Ryan and T.J. Tynan both added assists on the goal by Rust.
To complete the first period, Brooks Bertsch tallied his third goal of the season at 19:25 of the period to make it 2-1. Cory Thorson and Joey Benik each carded assists on the play for the Huskies.
Notre Dame tied the game at 2-2 at 8:18 of the second period with a goal by Kevin Lind. Mario Lucia and Peter Schneider gained assists on the play for the Irish. To end the second period, SCSU regained a 3-2 lead with a power play goal by Brodzinski at 19:35 of the period. Kossila and Ethan Prow posted assists on the play for SCSU.
The goal was Brodzinski's 21st of the campaign, and the assist was Kossila's 27th of the season and it was Prow's 19th assist of 2013-14.
In the third period, Notre Dame knotted the score at 3-3 with a goal by Thomas DiPauli at 9:35. Rust and Eric Johnson had assists on the play.
On the power play, SCSU was 1-of-5 on the night and Notre Dame was 0-of-1. The Huskies were only whistled for one penalty in the contest.
The victory marks the second consecutive season that the Huskies have defeated Notre Dame in the first round of regional play. Last year, the Huskies posted a win over the Irish on the way to the 2013 NCAA Division I Midwest Regional crown in Toledo.
SCSU will now advance to the championship game of the 2014 West Regional against the University of Minnesota. The game will start at 6:30 p.m. (CT) at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul, Minn.
