St. Cloud State sweeps #5/6 Miami with 3-2 victory on Jan. 10

St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (9-10-1, 4-5-1 NCHC) earned its first weekend sweep of the season with a big 3-2 victory over #5/6 Miami University (14-8-0, 7-5-0 NCHC) on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The loss marked the first time in 2014-15 that the RedHawks have been swept and it extended the Huskies' current win streak to two games heading into next week's NCHC match-ups at the University of Denver on Jan. 16-17.
The Huskies opened the evening's scoring at 2:09 of the first period with an even strength goal by junior forward Jonny Brodzinski. He was assisted on the play by linemates junior Jimmy Murray and senior Joe Rehkamp. The goal was Brodzinski's team leading 12th of the season and it moved his current point scoring streak to eight games.
The Huskies extended their lead to 2-0 with a power play goal in the closing moments of the first period. Rookie forward Patrick Russell scored the PPG at 19:48 with assists from David Morley and Niklas Nevalainen. This was Russell's fourth goal of the season and his 13th point this winter. In the first period, SCSU dominated the offense as the Huskies outshot the RedHawks 13-4.
Miami's Kevin Morris broke SCSU's shutout at 11:28 of the second period with a power play goal by Kevin Morris. Louie Belpedio and Riley Barber each posted assists on the play for MU.
In the third period, the Huskies' Joe Rehkamp capped a stellar weekend with his second consecutive game-winning goal. Rehkamp lit the lamp at 5:19 of the third after Brodzinski found him open on the left side of the net with a picture perfect cross-ice pass. This was Rehkamp's second goal of the season and it was Brodzinski's eighth assist of the year.
Brodzinski currently paces the Huskies with 20 points (12g/8a) and also has 55 goals and 39 assists for 94 career points in 100 games played as a Husky.
The game's scoring was completed at 10:57 of the third period with a goal by Miami's Austin Czarnik, which included an assist from Anthony Louis.
In the game, SCSU outshot the RedHawks 29-18 with both squads scoring a power play goal (SCSU was 1-4 and Miami was 1-1). SCSU's Rasmus Reijola collected the first win of his collegiate career with 17 saves between the pipes. The victory moved Reijola's 2014-15 record to 1-1-0 with a 2.36 goals against average. Jay Williams made 26 saves for Miami in the nets.
