St. Cloud State drops 4-1 decision at Denver on Jan. 17

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (9-12-1, 4-7-1 NCHC) suffered a 4-1 setback at #13 University of Denver (13-7-1, 6-5-0 NCHC) on Saturday, Jan. 17 in Denver, Colo. The loss concluded a weekend sweep by the Pioneers against the Huskies, who will return to action next weekend at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud against Western Michigan on Jan. 23-24.
The two teams skated to a 0-0 tie in the first period before DU's Nolan Zajac got the offense going with a goal at 7:06 of the second period. Assists on the play were added by Matt Tabrum and Larkin Jacobson.
DU maintained a 1-0 lead until the third period, at which time the Huskies tied the game up with an even-strength goal by senior captain Nick Oliver at 2:37. Jimmy Murray and Jarrod Rabey gained assists on the goal, which was Oliver's first of the 2014-15 season and his fifth goal at SCSU. The assist was also Rabey's first point of the season.
Denver notched its game winner at 6:50 of the third period with a marker by Danton Heinen that made it 2-1. Joey LaLeggia scored a power play goal at 13:05 of the third period to make it 3-1 and the Pioneers capped the scoring at 14:45 with a goal by Trevor Moore.
On the night, DU outshot the Huskies 30-29. SCSU was 0-5 on the power play in the game and DU was 1-4 on the advantage in the game. Charlie Lindgren was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 26 saves in the game, while Tanner Jaillett had 28 saves for the Pioneers.
