WMU rallies in third period to defeat St. Cloud State

A third period rally by Western Michigan University proved to be the downfall for the St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (10-13-1, 5-8-1 NCHC) as it suffered a tough 3-2 setback at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Saturday, Jan. 24.
The Huskies charged to a 2-0 lead after two periods of play but three unanswered goals by the Broncos in the final period ended SCSU's hopes of a weekend sweep at home.
SCSU opened the night's scoring at 18:16 of the first period with a goal by rookie forward Judd Peterson. Assists on the play were recorded by Kalle Kossila and Blake Winiecki. This was Peterson's third goal of the season and it was also Kossila's team-leading 12th assist of the year.
The Huskies pushed their lead to 2-0 with a goal by freshman Patrick Russell at 1:18 of the second period. Juniors David Morley and Joey Benik had assists on the goal, which was Russell's sixth of the season. The assist was Morley's seventh of the year and it was Benik's 12th assist of the year and his fifth assist in the series against WMU.
In the third period, WMU broke the shutout with a power play marker by Will Kessel at 3:48. Chris Dienes and Taylor Fleming had assists on the play for the Broncos. Colton Hargrove tied the game at 8:39 of the third with an assist from Dries. WMU then won the contest with a goal by Justin Kovacs at 9:56 of the third period. Kessel and Fred Tiffels had assists on the play.
On the night, SCSU outshot the Broncos 35-24. On the power play, SCSU was 0-5 and WMU was 1-2. Charlie Lindgren was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 21 saves and Lukas Hafner earned the victory for WMU with 33 saves to his credit.
