St. Cloud State men's hockey rallies to gain 4-3 win over #5 Omaha

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (14-14-1, 9-9-1 NCHC) rallied with two third period goals to gain a 4-3 victory over #5 ranked Omaha (17-9-3, 11-7-1 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 20 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies' David Morley scored the game winner at 17:12 of the third period with a solo assist from Joey Benik. The goal capped a two-goal rally that offset a 3-2 lead by the Mavericks midway through the third period.
SCSU opened the night in top fashion as junior blueliner Ethan Prow scored his third goal of the season with a power play marker at 8:16 of the first period. Kalle Kossila and Joey Benik each had assists on the play, which gave SCSU a 1-0 lead. The Huskies stretched their lead to 2-0 at 12:11 of the first period with a power play tally by Patrick Russell. He tipped in a shot from the blueline by Prow, while the second assist was credited to Kossila.
This was Russell's 10th goal of the season, while it marked Kossila's 19th helper of the year and Prow's 11th assist of the year.
The Huskies held the two goal edge until 18:14 of the second period, when Omaha's Ian Brady scored a power play goal with a single assist from Jake Guentzel. Tyler Vessel tied the contest at 2-2 with his even strength goal at 9:26 of the third period.
Omaha then gained its first lead of the night with a power play goal by Austin Ortega at 10:56 of the third period. The goal provided Omaha with a 3-2 lead in the contest.
The Huskies evened the score six minutes later as rookie forward Blake Winiecki posted the game tying goal at 16:56 of the third period. Joe Rehkamp blitz up ice set up the first assist while Andrew Prochno gained the second assist on the play. This was Winiecki's fifth goal of the year, Rehkamp's ninth assist and Prochno's 11th assist of the season.
The play set up Morley's third period heroics just 16 seconds later that helped SCSU seal the deal. In the contest, Charlie Lindgren had 23 saves for the Huskies as Ryan Massa made 35 saves in the loss for Omaha. On the night, SCSU outshot the Mavericks 39-26. On the power play, SCSU was 2-3 and Omaha was 2-3 in the game.
