St. Cloud State men's hockey advances with 3-2 OT win over MTU

The St. Cloud State men's hockey team (20-18-1) has advanced to the championship game of the NCAA regional for the third consecutive season and fourth time since 2010. The #3 seed Huskies punched their ticket to the title match at the 2015 NCAA DIvision I West Region tournament with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over #2 Michigan Tech University (29-10-2) on Friday, March 27 at the Scheels Arena in Fargo, N.D.

St. Cloud State's Judd Peterson stepped into a starring role as he charted the game winner at the 8:11 mark of the overtime session. He tallied his fourth goal of the year with a solo assist from Joe Rehkamp.
The OT winner highlighted a strong second half comeback for the Huskies as they were outshot 29-9 in the first two periods and trailed 2-1 in the third period.
MTU opened the day's scoring at 7:18 of the first period with an even strength marker by Tanner Keno. He was assisted on the play by Alex Petan and Shane Hanna.
The SCSU Huskies tied the game up at 1:06 of the second period with a power play goal by Kalle Kossila. David Morley and Ethan Prow had assists on the play, which was Kossila's sixth goal of the season. Prow now has 19 assists this season and Morley has 12 helpers to his credit in 2014-15.
MTU regained the lead at 10:54 of the third period with a goal by C.J. Eick. Joel L'Esperance and Dylan Steman each had assists on the play for the MTU Huskies.
In the closing minutes of play, SCSU pulled goaltender Charlie Lindgren for the extra attacker that resulted in the game tying goal at 19:22 of the third period. Jonny Brodzinski posted the goal with assists from Patrick Russell and Joey Benik. This was Brodzinski's team leading 21st goal of the season, while the assist was Russell's 15th helper of the year and Benik's 23rd assist of 2014-15.
In the OT session, MTU outshot the Huskies 5-2 but Lindgren continued his sterling play as he finished the evening with 36 saves. Jamie Phillips was the goalie of record for MTU with 18 saves.
On the day, MTU outshot the Huskies 38-21. On the power play, SCSU was 1-2 and MTU was 0-1.
The Huskies will now advance to the championship game of the West Regional tournament on Saturday, March 28 at 8 p.m. The Huskies' opponent will be the winner of tonight's North Dakota (#1 seed)-Quinnipiac (#4 seed) game.
