Indoor Track & Field Programs Compete Well at Minnesota Open

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Cloud State indoor track and field programs had several standout individual performances at the 2016 Minnesota Open, hosted by the University of Minnesota, on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
The two teams ended up winning a total of six events on the afternoon and had 12 top-three finishes. The teams also had three NCAA indoor provisional qualifying performances.
Among the highlights and top finishers were senior thrower Ryan Johnson placing third in the weight throw with his toss of 18.74m. The throw was also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Junior Patience Yalartai earned the victory in the long jump with a leap of 5.44m. She has now won the long jump twice this season.
Junior Keyshawn Davis also won the long jump on the men's side with his jump of 7.03m. The mark was also an NCAA provisional qualifier leap.
Freshman Elijah Pitchford won the men's triple jump with his NCAA provisional qualifying jump of 14.30m.
Fellow freshman Nicole Morpurgo finished as the runner-up in the 60m dash (7.92).
Freshman Vance Barnes placed third in the 60m dash on the men's side (7.00).
Junior Jasmine Grant earned the victory in the 400m dash for the second straight weekend (59.84).
Junior JoVonte Suber finished in second in the 600m (1:21.9), while freshman Wesley Turner finished in third in the same event (1:23.87).
Sophomore J.T. Butler earned the 200m title with his time of 22.19.
Both indoor track & field programs resume competition next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22-23, at the MSU Multi-Open on the campus of Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn.
