Indoor Track & Field Programs Have Strong Showings at Northwest Open

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Cloud State indoor track and field programs compete well at the 2016 Northwest Open, host by the University of Minnesota, on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
The two teams ended up winning a total of nine events on the afternoon and had 14 top-three finishes.
Among the highlights and top finishers were a sweep of the 400m dash by junior Jasmine Grant (1:01.59), junior Kristen Wendt (1:03.73) and sophomore Emily Yeager (1:03.95).
Sophomore J.T. Butler won the 200m dash with his time of 22.23.
Junior Sam Sunstrom earned the victory in the 3,000m (10:22.28).
The 4x400 relay team of Grant, Yeager, freshman Hannah Szech and Wendt won their event in a time of 4:15.75.
The men's 4x400 relay team of sophomore Marcus Welk, junior JoVonte Suber, freshman Peter Bates and sophomore Isaiah Pitchford took third in their event (3:24.86).
Sophomore Natalie Gottschalk finished third in the long jump (5.23m).
Junior Keyshawn Davis earned the victory in the long jump for the men (6.85m).
Junior Patience Yalartai won the triple jump for the women (11.72m).
Freshman Elijah Pitchford won the triple jump on the men's side (14.40m).
Redshirt junior Cassie Cardinal took first in the shot put (13.31m) with senior teammate Heather Clankie placing second in the event (11.46m).
Senior Ryan Johnson won the weight throw for the second straight indoor event with his toss of 18.53m.
Both indoor track & field programs resume competition next Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Minnesota Open once again on the University of Minnesota campus.
