Cross Country Program Competes At 2016 NSIC Championship This Weekend

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The St. Cloud State cross country team is off to the 2016 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championship this weekend. The event will take place in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Yankton Trail Park and is hosted by Augustana University. The women's 6,000-meter race starts at 11:15 a.m. and is preceded by the men's 8,000-meter race at 10 a.m. The women's race will have 15 teams competing, while 12 men's team will run in their race.
The SCSU women's program is led by seniors Sam Sunstrom and Rachel Sakry. Sunstrom is a two-time Second Team All-NSIC selection after finishing 19th in the race in 2014 and 17th overall in the race as a freshman in 2013. Sunstrom has been the team's top finisher and placed in the top nine in all four events this season including two individual victories. She began her year with a win in at the UWRF Falcon Invitational in a time of 22:17.70. She placed fourth in St. Olaf Invite (22:15), ninth at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational (23:18.9) and earned the victory at the home-hosted Bob Waxlax Invitational in a season best time of 21:48.1.
Sakry has been steady this season in finishing 20th at the UWRF Falcon Invitational (24:55.80). She was SCSU's third finisher in earning 18th place at the Bob Waxlax Invitational in a season-time of 23:43.4.
Freshman Autumn Shurbert-Hetzel has had two top-20 finishes in her first year on campus and ran a season-best time of 23:44.3 in placing 19th at the Bob Waxlax Invitational.
Fellow freshman Chrissy Lofgren has placed in the top-25 in three of the four meets including a season-best time of 23:06.5 in finishing 10th at the Bob Waxlax Invitational.
The SCSU women finished ninth in the race last season with 247 points and an average time of 25:28. The team placed eighth in 2014 and also took home ninth during the 2013 season.
Senior Kaylee Roelike was the squad's top finisher last season at the 2015 NSIC Cross Country Championships in earning 26th place in a time of 24:21.2. Sunstrom was the team's second finisher at the 2015 race in earning 35th in a time of 24:44.8.
The top 10 finishers in the race are First Team All-NSIC selections with finishers 11-20 earning Second Team All-NSIC recognition.
The Augustana men have won the last seven NSIC team championships. On the women's side, two of the top five teams in the nation are in the meet in the University of Mary and defending NSIC champion Minnesota Duluth. UMD has taken home the women's title in two of the last three years. The University of Mary's Alexis Zeis is returning to defend her individual title this season.
The Huskies continue their 2016 season on Saturday, Nov. 5, with a return trip to Sioux Falls, S.D. and Yankton Trail Park for the NCAA Division II Central Region Meet. The NCAA DII National Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Abbey Course in Saint Leo, Florida.
