Sam Sunstrom Earns First Team All-NSIC Honors To Lead Cross Country at NSIC Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Senior Sam Sunstrom placed sixth overall to earn First Team All-NSIC honors and help lead the St. Cloud State cross country program at the 2016 NSIC Cross Country Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D. at the Yankton Trail Park on Saturday morning, Oct. 22.
Sunstrom's First Team All-Conference honor was the first of her career. She had previously been a two-time Second Team All-NSIC honoree from both her freshman and sophomore campaigns. Sunstrom ran a season-best 20:53.51 in the 2016 championship meet and has now placed in the top 10 in all five meets that she has competed in this season.
The program put a total of three runners in the top 40 with freshman Chrissy Lofgren placing 27th with her time of 22:10.09 and senior Kaylee Roelike earning 39th with a 22:37.09. Fellow senior Rachel Sakry earned 63rd with a 23:07.87, freshman Autumn Shurbert-Hetzel was 72nd with a 23:33.41, junior McKenzie Holt placed 89th with a 24:06.70, junior Zia Matti was 92nd with a 24:15.54, senior Maria Hauer placed 111th with a 25:37.12 and sophomore Ally Schwark finished 117th with a 26:09.34.
Emilee Trost of Minnesota Duluth won the individual title at the meet with her time of 19:51.37.
The Huskies placed seventh overall with an average time of 22:28.40 and 73 points. The University of Mary was the team winner with an average time of 20:39.98 and 26 points.
Next, SCSU completes in the NCAA Division II Central Region Meet also at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Nov. 5.
