St. Cloud State clinches fifth consecutive NSIC championship

The #2 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (15-1, 7-0 NSIC) captured its fifth consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship with a convincing 35-3 victory over #8 Upper Iowa (14-2, 7-1 NSIC) on Thursday, Feb. 11 at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies have now won NSIC titles in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and they will finish up their conference regular season schedule on Feb. 19 with a 7 p.m. home match against Augustana University at Halenbeck Hall. Â The Huskies have now won 43 consecutive NSIC dual matches dating back to an 18-13 loss to Augustana on Jan. 27, 2011.
SCSU opened the match against UIU with a close 5-4 victory by #8 Uthman Rabiu over the Peacock's Dalton Westerlund at 184. Â The Huskies stretched their lead to 6-0 with a 7-3 decision by SCSU's V.J. Giulio against Upper Iowa's Ryan Parmely at 197.
In action at 285-pounds, #5 Austin Goergen gained a tech fall at the 3:00 with a 16-0 tally against Avery Jacobs of UIU. Â The wins kept rolling in for SCSU as #1 Tim Prescott battled back to earn a fall at 6:59 of the match against UIU's Maleek Williams, which gave the Huskies a 17-0 lead.
SCSU's lone setback was at 133-pounds as Jarred Oftedal lost an 8-3 decision against UIU's Mitch Funk. Â In a battle at 141-pounds, SCSU's Matt Nelson picked up points with a 3-1 sudden death win over UIU's Jordan Roths that made the tally 20-3.
At 149-pounds, #5 Jay Hildreth dispatched UIU's Damian Penichet with a 10-3 decison and #6 Larry Bomstad scored a 4-2 win against UIU's Jordan Rinken at 157-pounds.
SCSU iced the match at 165-pounds with a fall by #1 Clint Poster at 3:43 against Upper Iowa's #4 ranked Zak Benitz. Â To cap the evening's score at 35-3, Clayton Jennisen posted a 10-4 win for the Huskies against UIU's Colbey Vance at 174-pounds.
