Former St. Cloud State University goaltender Charlie Lindgren is scheduled to make his first NHL start in the nets for the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, April 7 at the Carolina Hurricanes. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. (ET) at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C.
The NCHC Goaltender of the Year and an All-NCHC First Team selection in 2015-16, Lindgren signed a professional contract with the Canadiens after the Huskies completed play this season at the NCAA Division I West Regional. Lindgren has been on the bench with the Canadiens during previous games and will be making his NHL debut in Raleigh, N.C.
If he plays tonight, Lindgren will become the third SCSU player this season to make his NHL playing debut. Earlier this season, former SCSU standouts Kevin Gravel and Nic Dowd both made their NHL debuts for the Los Angeles Kings. Lindgren would become the 27th former Husky to play in the NHL and the first former SCSU goalie to lace up the skates for an NHL game since the legendary Frank Brimsek played for Boston and Chicago from 1938 to 1950.
Lindgren ended his season with a school record 30 wins (30-9-1) in the nets this season for SCSU. His goals against average of 2.13 in 2015-16 ranks second in the team records and he also had a .925 save rate (fourth in the team records) this winter with 1020 saves (second best in the team records).
In three years with the Huskies, Lindgren charted a 51-29-3 career record. He set a new team record for best career goals against average at 2.21 and ranks second in the team charts with a career save rate of .921. He made 2,101 career saves in 4891:57 minutes of play for the Huskies.
Of note, Dowd and Gravel have played in five games this season for the Los Angeles Kings in 2015-16. Both played at SCSU from 2010 to 20104. The other former SCSU players on NHL rosters this season include Matt Hendricks (2001-04 at SCSU), who is playing for the Edmonton Oilers and Matt Cullen (1995-97 at SCSU), who is playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Hendricks has played in the NHL since 2008-09 with stops at Colorado, Washington, Nashville and Edmonton. He has scored 46 goals and 49 assists during his NHL career. Cullen has played in the NHL since 1997-98. He has played in 1,366 NHL games with 245 goals and 452 assists during his pro career. Cullen played for Anaheim, Florida, Carolina, New York Rangers, Ottawa, Minnesota, Nashville and Pittsburgh during his NHL tenure.
