1/13/2017 11:18:00 PM | Men's Basketball
St. Cloud, Minn. – Redshirt sophomore Gage Davis recorded a game-high 26 points to help lead the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (12-7, 8-2 NSIC) to a thrilling 92-89 victory over Upper Iowa (11-6, 8-3 NSIC) on Friday night, Jan. 13, at Halenbeck Hall.
Davis shot an efficient 10-for-18 from the field and also knocked down a season-high five threes in eight attempts in scoring his 26. He also recorded five rebounds, two steals and four assists. Senior Scottie Stone tallied 22 points, four rebounds and three assists. Freshman Trevon Marshall came off the bench to score 17 points and led the team with his six assists. Junior Jon Averkamp was bloodied and bruised in picking up nine points, six rebounds and two steals. Fellow junior Andy Foley put together an eight point, eight rebound and three assist game. Senior Mark Hall scored six points with a pair of assists.
The Peacocks put five players in double figures with Dennis Austin III leading the team with his 20 points. Carson Parker totaled 19 points, Jimmy Roth scored 17, Luke Lenhart tallied 12 points and Mitchell Eighme recorded 10 points.
Both teams shot exceptionally well from the field in the contest. SCSU shot 57.4 percent from the field (35-for-61) and 50 percent from the three-point line (9-for-18). Upper Iowa nearly matched the Huskies shot-for-shot in going 54.5 percent from the field (36-for-66) and 45 percent from three-point range (9-for-20). The Huskies outrebounded the Peacocks 32-29, but the 29 rebounds were a season low for the team this season. UIU held a 50-28 advantage in points in the paint, but SCSU scored 13 second chance points compared to Upper Iowa's two. The game featured 10 tied scores and eight lead changes.
SCSU trailed at the break, 43-37, but held the second half advantage by a 55-46 margin. The Huskies took the lead for good with 2:58 remaining in the game on a made jumper from Stone, 86-85. After missed foul shots from both teams, Marshall was fouled and hit one of his two free throws to increase the margin to two. Another defensive stop followed before Averkamp increased the SCSU lead to four, 89-85, on a made jumper with 1:21 remaining in the contest. Jimmy Roth made it again a one-possession game, 89-87, on his made jumper with exactly one minute remaining. After a missed three, Averkamp came up with a gutty offensive rebound to allow SCSU to maintain possession. Marshall was again fouled, but this time he hit both of his free throws to again put SCSU up four, 91-87 with 26 seconds remaining. Roth drew a foul on the ensuing possession and after two made free throws the SCSU lead again stood at two points, 91-89. Davis then was fouled and hit one of his two attempts to put the lead back out to three, 92-89. The Peacocks missed their initial potential game-tying three attempt with two seconds remaining, but an offensive rebound allowed UIU to call a timeout, draw up a play and attempt their second potential game-tying three. The shot by Roth missed though to allow SCSU to come away with the victory.
The Huskies keep the home stand going and host Winona State on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall
