Gage Davis reaches 1,000 career points
St. Cloud, Minn. – Redshirt sophomore Gage Davis and senior Scottie Stone combined for 56 points to help lead the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (13-7, 9-2 NSIC) to an 88-65 victory over Winona State (8-8, 5-7 NSIC) on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Halenbeck Hall.
Davis scored 29 points with nine rebounds and three steals. Davis' 29 points also allowed him to reach 1,000 career points at SCSU in only 49 games. Stone tallied 27 points along with a season-high eight rebounds. He also picked up four assists and a steal. Redshirt freshman Alex O'Neill scored 10 points off the bench in going 3-for-3 from the field and 4-for-5 from the line. Junior Andy Foley totaled nine points and a team-high six assists along with a block and two steals.
Winona State put three in double figures led by Connor Flack's 14 points. Kyle Bauman scored 12 with Tommy Gathje recording 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Huskies outshot the Warriors, 50.8 percent (32-for-63) to 45.2 percent (28-for-62) from the field and also knocked down 43.8 percent of their three-point attempts (7-for-16). SCSU went an impressive 17-for-18 from the free throw line (94.4 percent) plus had seven steals and scored 24 points off turnovers.
St. Cloud State got off to fast start and never trailed at any point in the contest. The team's largest lead was 28 points late in the second half, 87-59, on a made jumper from sophomore Brindley Theisen. The Huskies led 49-28 at the half and outscored Winona State by a basket in the second half, 39-37.
The Huskies keep the home stand going and host Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall
Notes
- Gage Davis has now led the team in scoring in 16 of the 20 games.
- Davis' 29 points was his eighth game this season scoring more than 25 points and the 14th time in his career that he has hit the mark.
- Scottie Stone's 27 points is his ninth 20 plus point performance of the season and the 29th of his career.
-Stone hit three threes in the contest against Winona State to move past Brett Putz (2008-12) for second on the all-time three-point list at SCSU with 248.
-He is only two made threes from tying David Dreas' school record of 250 made three-pointers.
- Alex O'Neill's 10 points were his second time in double figures this season and the first time he has gotten there since putting up 10 against Waldorf University (11/18/16).
-Andy Foley led the team in assists for the third time this season.
-The team's 94.4 percent shooting from the free throw line was a season-high.
-The team's 50.8 percent shooting from the field was the ninth time the program has shot better than 50 percent from the field in a game this season (8-1 in those games).
-The team has now led wire-to-wire in four games this season.
