Men’s Basketball Plays Three Conference Games This Week

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team (13-7, 9-2 NSIC) has another busy week of action on tap as the program plays three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opponents. The program starts the week by welcoming in Minnesota Duluth (4-13, 3-8 NSIC) for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Halenbeck Hall. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 10, but was postponed due to the weather and poor road conditions. The team then is the road and travels to take on Northern State (12-6, 8-4 NSIC) on Friday, Jan. 20, at 8 p.m. and MSU Moorhead (15-3, 10-2 NSIC) on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 6:15 p.m.

Scouting Minnesota Duluth
- The Bulldogs are coached by Matt Bowen, who is in his fifth year running the program.
- UMD has lost three straight games after falling over the weekend to Winona State, 78-76 in OT, and to Upper Iowa, 85-78
- Luke Harris is the only current player averaging in double figures for the program at 10.2 points per game, while shooting 47.1 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from three-point range and 72.0 percent from the free throw line.
- Luke Rohrscheib sports an average of 9.0 points per game, Kyle Schalow puts up 8.7 points per game, Trevor Entwisle has an average of 8.5 points a contest and Brandon Myer gets 7.8 points per game.
- Entwisle is the leading three-point shooter at 48 percent.
- Sam Burns is the top rebounder with his 62 boards.
Scouting Northern State
- The Wolves are coached by Paul Sather, who is in his fifth year running the program.
- The Wolves have won three of the last four games and split the contests over the weekend to Wayne State (W, 76-66) and Augustana (L, 80-66)
- Mack Arvidson is the leading scorer at 17.2 points per game.
- Arvidson is also shooting 47.5 percent from the field, 45.8 percent from three-point range and 77.5 percent from the line.
- He is one of four players averaging in double figures this season with DJ Pollard checking in at 14.4 points per game, Logan Doyle totals 14.3 points a contest and Ian Smith at 13.8.
- Doyle is the team's leading rebounder and is placed third in the NSIC at 8.9 boards per game.
- He is also shooting 61.3 percent from the field.
- NSU, as team, shoots an impressive 50.1 percent clip from the field and 42.3 percent from beyond the arc in averaging 86.2 points per game (second in the NSIC).
Scouting MSU Moorhead
- The Dragons are coached by Chad Walthall, who is in his seventh year running the program and 14th season overall as a collegiate head coach.
- MSU Moorhead has won five games in a row and six of the last seven games entering the week.
- The program defeated Augustana in double overtime over the weekend, 91-89, and also picked up a 95-87 victory over Wayne State.
- Of the three total losses for the Dragons this season, two have come at home during conference games to Northern State in double overtime and to Minnesota State.
- Aaron Lien leads the group of four players that are averaging in double figures this season.
- Lien has an average of 19.1 points per game, while also shooting 57.8 percent from the field, 45.8 percent from three-point range and 87.2 percent from the free throw line.
- Tanner Kretchman averages 16.9 points per game, while shooting 48.7 percent from the field, 45.7 percent from three-point range and 78 percent from the free throw line.
- Kretchman is also second in the NSIC in assists with his average of 5.9 helpers per game.
- Ayob Ayob sports an average of 16 points per game and is shooting 50.5 percent from the field, 44.7 percent from three-point range and 77.6 percent from the free throw line.
- Jon Doss tallies 10.6 points per game, while shooting 41 percent from three-point range and leading the club with 96 rebounds.
- MSU is the top scoring and shooting team in the league at 89.1 points per game and the team is shooting 51.5 percent from the field, 76.5 percent from the free-throw line and 42.6 percent from three-point range.
Prior Meetings
- St. Cloud State is 55-32 all-time against Minnesota Duluth including a 63-58 victory in Duluth on Dec. 17.
- The programs first started playing against each other during the 1932-33 season.
- Scottie Stone led the team with his 30 points against UMD last time out.
- Minnesota Duluth defeated St. Cloud State by a 100-92 score in their last trip to St. Cloud.
- St. Cloud State is 28-12 all-time against Northern State since the teams started playing against each other in 1959-60.
- The two teams split the contests last season with Northern State defeating SCSU by an 88-81 score at home (12/12/15) and St. Cloud State defending the home court well against the Wolves with a 102-82 victory (2/12/16).

- St. Cloud State won both games over the weekend to Upper Iowa and Winona State to improve to 13-7 overall and 9-2 in NSIC play
- The team is 9-2 in league play for the first time since the 2011 season.
- St. Cloud State, after the postponed game, started the week and defeated Upper Iowa by a 92-89 score on Jan. 13
- The Huskies trailed by six at the half and were down at one point by 11 in the second half before rallying for the victory.
- The game marked the fourth time this season that SCSU has used a second half rally to defeat an NSIC school.
- Gage Davis led the team with 26 points plus had five rebounds and four assists.
- Scottie Stone chipped in 22 points, four rebounds and three assists.
- Trevon Marshall scored in double figures for the third time this season with 17 points.
- Marshall also led the team in assists with six for the fourth time this season.
- Andy Foley picked up eight points and eight rebounds.
- Jon Averkamp fought through a bloody eyebrow to score nine points with six rebounds.
- The Huskies shot 57.4 percent from the field in the game (35-for-61).
- The shooting percentage was the second-highest of the season
- SCSU really turned it on in the second half when the program shot 73.3 percent from the field (22-for-30) and 57.1 percent from beyond the arc (4-for-7).
- The program improved to 8-0 this season when scoring 90 or more points in a game.
- SCSU extended the winning streak to two with an 88-65 victory over Winona State on Jan. 14.
- Davis put up 29 points and nine rebounds plus three steal in the game.
- His 29 points allowed him to pass the 1000-point barrier and became the 40th player in school history to accomplish the feat.
- Davis was able to reach the 1,000-point club in only 49 games and that among the six fastest in school history (Dan Hagen, Kevin Catron, Vern Baggentoss, Dan Kesler and Tony King).
- Stone hit 9-of-18 shots for 27 points in the victory over Winona State.
- It was Stone's ninth game with 20 or more points this season.
- Stone hit a total of five three-pointers on the week to run his career total to 248 to pass Brett Putz (245 from 2008-12) for second on the school's three-point list and also get within two of tying the school record of 250 by David Drea (2004-08).
- Stone has now scored in double figures in 19 of the 20 games this season and in 35 of his last 36 games.
- Alex O'Neill came off the bench and shot 3-for-3 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line in scoring 10 points.
- The double figure performance was the second of the season for O'Neill and his first since also scoring 10 points against Waldorf University (11/18/16).
- Foley had another steady all-around game for SCSU with nine points and six assists plus two steals.
- The Huskies have now scored 80 or more points in 12 of the last 13 games.
- The program also hit a season high 94.4 percent of their free throw attempts (17-for-18) in the victory over the Warriors.
- SCSU led from start to finish in the 88-65 win over Winona State.
- It was the fourth wire-to-wire win of the season and the eighth time the feat has been accomplished the last two seasons.
- The Huskies return home to Halenbeck Hall to host Wayne State College and Augustana.
- The game against WSC is on Friday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m.
- The program's contest against Augustana is on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m.
- SCSU is 18-3 all-time against Wayne State in a series that started in 1960-61.
- The program has also won the last seven contests against the Wildcats.
- SCSU defeated Wayne State by a 108-74 score last season (1/16/16).
- Gage Davis had 36 points and 13 rebounds.
- Scottie Stone contributed 34 points.
- The 108 points was the most points for the program since scoring 120 against Dakota State during the 2008-09 season
- The program is 46-40 all-time against the reigning Division II National Champions in Augustana.
- The program has lost the last two games against the Vikings including a 102-63 loss last season.
- The 39-point defeat was the worst for the program since the 2001-02 season.
- Stone scored 13 and Davis tallied 11 in the loss to AU.
- The last win for SCSU against Augustana was at home during the 2013-14 season by a 76-70 score.
